Instruments for Sale
Handcrafted in the USA exclusively for Mountain Music School, we have taken the mountain dulcimer back to it's traditional Appalachian roots in design and playability. Our instruments have 3 strings and a 17 fret diatonic fretboard (no 6 1/2 or 13 1/2 fret). The strings are the perfect height for strumming, flatpicking or fingerpicking using a noter on the melody string. Most songs can be played in the authentic DAA (lonian) tuning but you can also easily play in Aeolian (DAC), Dorian (DAG) and Mountain Mixolydian (AAA) by changing only one string using the geared guitar type tuners. Dulcimer means "sweet sound" and sweet is the sound produced by the solid cedar soundboard top. The fretboard and scrolled head are solid mahogany and the back and sides an attractive mahogany laminate. Our two models differ only in the sound-hole patterns. The "Edd" model has 4 sets of symmetrical circles and the "Nettie" model has 4 hearts. Our instruments honor the memory of Edd and Nettie Presnell who lived in Banner Elk, NC and taught us to play old-time mountain style dulcimer; a tradition that we continue to share at Mountain Music School in Hendersonville, NC.
